Since the mid to late 1970s there have been all sorts of rumors about an underground laboratory beneath the town of Dulce. . .The UFO Hunters show on the History Channel recently featured the entire saga of what has been taking place on Native American soil, and a few days later George Noory and Coast to Coast AM plunged head first trying to make sense out of the various accounts that have surfaced.

Beckley admits that it is difficult to pin point exactly when this macabre saga started to develop. But he gives credit to an engineer named Paul Bennewitz for getting the ball rolling when Bennewitz says he was called to the area when aliens started to communicate with him over a radio receiver. He had been directed to Dulce after observing UFOs over Kirkland Air Force Bases nuclear storage facility. Standing near the tall cliffs outside Dulce, Bennewitz took a series of photographs showing unidentified craft diving into the mountains through what he claimed were entrance ways that could be opened and closed.

One individual in the U.S. military who was involved in the early stages of this investigation claims he engaged in hand to hand combat with ETs who had taken over level seven of the Dulce Base after a conflict with our soldiers. Another person involved in this epic committed “suicide” — or was it murder? -shortly after the “Dulce affair” was made public.

A new book featuring a pictorial history of Roswell hit bookstore shelves Monday. Roswell, published by Arcadia Publishing, is a photo-essay by John LeMay, a local author and Goddard High School alum.

LeMay, 23, grew up in Roswell and graduated from GHS in 2004. He is enrolled at ENMU-Roswell.



LeMay worked closely with the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico and local historian Elvis Fleming to research the project. "We scanned hundreds of pictures from the archives over a seven-month period," LeMay said. Fleming served as his guide through the intricacies of early Roswell history, and proofread the book. "I couldn't have done it without his help."



The success of the project has LeMay reconsidering his plans. "It's hard to go to school and write books. I don't know if I'll pursue any more degrees just yet. I might do another book."



The book traces the history of Roswell from a trading post on the Goodnight-Loving Trail to the modern era with more than 200 vintage photographs and a supporting narrative.



"Roswell residents seem frustrated that all the books on their hometown deal exclusively with the UFO crash. Readers will be pleased that the main focus of this book is Roswell's history," said LeMay, "while those solely interested in the crash will find it pops up frequently in the book in addition to having its own chapter."



The author will meet the public at four book signings in the coming days: Dec. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hastings Books Music and Video, 1705 N. Main St.; later that day from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Open House at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, 11th and Main streets; Dec. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico, 200 N. Lea Ave.; and Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cobean Stationery, 320 N. Richardson Ave.



LeMay said the book's release has generated more attention than he expected. "I'm used to it now," he said.



Arcadia specializes in publishing local histories, and this is the ninth book title about New Mexican subjects.



The book is part of Arcadia's Images of America series, which has 3,894 titles.

El Farol Cookbook

My El Farol Cookbook arrived in the mail yesterday and I am impressed! I already made one of the recipes and it turned out great! Mind you it was just a salad of grapes, tomato, olives, mozzarella, and various fresh seasonings and dressing, but it was delicious.

I had planned on making the curried chicken salad to see if it would taste as good as it does at the restaurant, but I could not find coriander seeds at either shop I went to. It was obvious that Whole Foods normally carries them (there was a slot for them), but they were out.

The best part of this cookbook is that all the recipes I read through seemed incredibly easy. Also, there was none of that weird cooking lingo that I find in some cookbooks and totally don't understand.

I can already say that of all the cookbooks I have (and I have lots of them) this one is already my favorite due to the simple recipes and assuming the recipes all come out tasting as good as they do at restaurant this book will get a lot of use.

Historic Photos of Albuquerque

I had wanted to buy a copy of this book for quite a while so I jumped at the chance when I was offered a review copy!

I am not sure how much appeal this would have to someone from out of state unless they are just big history buffs, but I think as someone who grew up in Albuquerque that anyone from Albuquerque would love this book.

There isn't much in the very old photos from the late 1800s that resemble modern Albuquerque, except for San Felipe de Neri church and a few other buildings. Really it could be any small western town. So funny to think of nothing between downtown and the mountains.

In the early 1900s the Alvarado Hotel appears. It was a large hotel located by the train station. By the time I was born it had been torn down, but it was spoke about with almost reverence by the older members of my family. There is no doubt from the photos in this book that the Alvarado was the hub of activity in early Albuquerque. Apparently there were a lot of people upset about it's destruction because just a few years ago they built an exact replica. It is a very good replica because I can't tell the difference between the one in the old photos and the new one.

There were two things that old Albuquerque had plenty of and so does modern Albuquerque - Saloons and Churches!

There are also lots of photos of celebrity visits to Albuquerque, like Annie Oakley, Rin Tin Tin, Charles and Anne Lindbergh, General Patton and others.

Anyhow, I can't imagine that anyone from Albuquerque wouldn't adore this book, it is packed full of history in the form of amazing photos.
