Roswell (Images of America: New Mexico): John LeMay: Books

A new book featuring a pictorial history of Roswell hit bookstore shelves Monday. Roswell, published by Arcadia Publishing, is a photo-essay by John LeMay, a local author and Goddard High School alum.

LeMay, 23, grew up in Roswell and graduated from GHS in 2004. He is enrolled at ENMU-Roswell.



LeMay worked closely with the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico and local historian Elvis Fleming to research the project. "We scanned hundreds of pictures from the archives over a seven-month period," LeMay said. Fleming served as his guide through the intricacies of early Roswell history, and proofread the book. "I couldn't have done it without his help."



The success of the project has LeMay reconsidering his plans. "It's hard to go to school and write books. I don't know if I'll pursue any more degrees just yet. I might do another book."



The book traces the history of Roswell from a trading post on the Goodnight-Loving Trail to the modern era with more than 200 vintage photographs and a supporting narrative.



"Roswell residents seem frustrated that all the books on their hometown deal exclusively with the UFO crash. Readers will be pleased that the main focus of this book is Roswell's history," said LeMay, "while those solely interested in the crash will find it pops up frequently in the book in addition to having its own chapter."



The author will meet the public at four book signings in the coming days: Dec. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hastings Books Music and Video, 1705 N. Main St.; later that day from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Open House at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, 11th and Main streets; Dec. 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico, 200 N. Lea Ave.; and Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cobean Stationery, 320 N. Richardson Ave.



LeMay said the book's release has generated more attention than he expected. "I'm used to it now," he said.



Arcadia specializes in publishing local histories, and this is the ninth book title about New Mexican subjects.



The book is part of Arcadia's Images of America series, which has 3,894 titles.

Part 1: V-shaped UFOs in NM photos

CHAMA, NM - Several meandering V-shaped UFOs near a mountain slope here turned up on a woman's digital photos. Three photos shot with a 21 megapixel camera caught multiple crafts approaching in the first frame, one craft in frame two moving close to the ground while the others take positions in the sky, and then frame three shows all of the crafts moving out of the area.

A couple Halloween photos

Geez, why did they wait until after I had a few of those cherry limeade mixed drinks to take my pic? Lipstick is gone and I look much drunker than I actually was. I wasn't even drunk, merely buzzed. I was chilly by that point though, we were sitting outside.

Photo taken in February near Sedillo Hill in Tijeras. I live near Tijeras and have taken photos of very similar objects (metallic looking orb thingies) several times.

Old Albuquerque Photos, 2

That first photo is of my mother. My grandparents first moved to Albuquerque around 1947 and I will guess that is when the photo was taken because they are still living in the airstream that they moved out here in from KY. As many people back then, they moved here because my grandfather had TB. Moving here did work and he didn't die of TB. Probably my mom was visiting from college at that time. She is so fashionable in that photo! I wouldn't be caught dead in a fur coat, but I do realize it was probably the height of fashion back then.

I am not sure where the second photo was taken. Probably the Sandia Mts, but I can't be totally sure. I also don't know who that man is, not my grandfather from what I can tell.

Old Albuquerque Photos

I found these in one of the many photo albums I brought home from my sister's. They had originally belonged to my grandmother.

I have no idea where the first shot was taken from, but as you can see there is not much of Albuquerque at that time.

The second photo is a restaurant my grandmother worked at when they first moved here. It was called the El Sombrero and as you can probably tell it was a giant sombrero shaped restaurant, much like the brown derby in CA only a sombrero. It was located at what is San Pedro and Central and as you can see from the background there was not much around there then. I don't know who the pretty lady is.

Not sure of the year the photos were taken I will guess somewhere between 1947 and the early 50s.
